Portraits of Orlando

It’s more important to understand someone than to judge them. We think the first step to understanding someone is asking them the fundamental questions about who they are and how they became the person they are today. Understanding and empathy are essential building blocks for a better, more compassionate world. We’re incredibly fortunate to be able to ask these questions each week through our interview series. Below you’ll find inspiring interviews from in and around Orlando.

The biggest struggle about this musical journey is the mental one. Feeling like you should be in a certain position, and fighting to obtain that position. Dealing with the realization that the people closest to you won’t be your biggest supporters, and despite that fact, it’s up to you to take the steps forward everyday. Read more>>

I hated having to grow again. It took a long time but I grew again as a stylist. 5 1/2 years went by and my husbands company had a huge layoff and he was included. I panicked. I wanted to make sure the ball was always in someone’s court. And that was mine. I wanted and needed to make sure that I had control of our future and if I fail , it was my fault and my fault only. I have never learned so much from owning my own business. It’s hard work and it’s constant. I thought I was going to loose my mind at first but I found my rhythm. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still hard but each day I learn the business a little better. And mostly I love being able to employ people. I love knowing that the salon is a safe environment for my staff. Read more>>

I attribute the start to my art career when I was 7; I attended my great-aunt Betty’s funeral and though I had never met her, I felt this intimate connection to her by being in her space and looking through her artwork. I felt inspired and in awe that she did this every day. Her husband gave me my first watercolor paint set and pad of paper from her materials. I sat at her artist desk to make my first painting, planting the seed that I could be an artist too. Read more>>

Life took an unexpected turn when my husband enlisted in the military, and we had to move out of Puerto Rico to North Carolina. Thoughts of opening my own coffee shop were definitely there, especially because where we were located, there weren’t many Puerto Ricans. It was a culture shock, to say the least. Later on, we decided to move to Florida, and although it felt a little more like home because of the community, good coffee was still missing, especially in my area. Read more>>

I’m bored in my room and scrolling through social media and kept seeing how many of the runners I follow were improving so much with a coach. It was super inspiring. I’ve always wanted to be a coach but never thought I would be good at it. I knew I had the knowledge but I just didn’t think I would be able to put it all together and make someone a better runner. But while sitting alone in this hotel room I got this increased sense of motivation and confidence. I don’t even know where it came from. This is when I knew it was time to pull the trigger and chase after a dream that’s been on my mind for years. Read more>>

When I was 11 years old, I saw someone who was like an older brother to me taking photos and I remember thinking to myself how cool it was, because it seemed like he had a superpower, the way he was able to freeze time with a little device in his hands. So that sparked my interest in photography. At the age of 12, I purchased my first camera, which was a “Canon Eos Rebel T3”. I saved up every dollar I got for about 9 months. When I was at the check-out, all I could think to myself was, I saved up all this money for 9 months, and was it all going to be gone just like that? Read more>>

I have always braided hair, as young as 10 years old. My little sisters were my first clients. Although those braids were hideous, practice made perfect. I did hair in middle, highschool and college. My clients ranged from classmates to family friends. I was always told that being a hairstylist is a hobby and to focus on a career that is more stable. I always had hair as a hustle while still working my 9-5. Once some of my videos/styles went viral, I could no longer manage a 40 hour work week at Suntrust banking. Each day, as I work with my clients, I’m reminded of the power of embracing what makes us different. It’s identity. It’s history. It’s a statement of self-love. It’s a way of life. Read more>>

Throughout my life, I have learned profound lessons from transformative experiences—overcoming abuse, addiction, the loss of a child, soul-searching cross-country road trips, and breaking free from the limitations of corporate and capitalist norms. After those first three stints in Orlando, I spent the next 11 years in Denver, Colorado where I started my original graphic and web design business. Owning my own business provided opportunities to do other things, so I took some chances and started working in event marketing and event management. I took on nearly any opportunity that knocked, and I found myself burning the candle at both ends. Within a month, I could have worked on branding for a small business, built a new website, and created some vehicle wraps or large format signage, all while living out of a hotel for nearly 14 days a month in other states working at events for 10+ hours a day. Read more>>

My journey in the fashion and entertainment industry has been a thriving experience and conventional. From the beginning, I knew I was different not just in my vision, but in the way I physically stood in this space. Being shorter than the industry standard has presented its challenges. I’ve faced rejection, been overlooked for opportunities, and had to prove my worth in spaces that often favor a specific mold. On top of that, being born with a clubfoot condition meant I had to push through physical challenges that many never see. Read more>>

Along the way, I did a bit of everything. I worked in retail, but I always felt deep inside that there was something more for me. In Puerto Rico, I had been a nail technician for many years, so in Florida, I decided to complete my education, obtain my license, and start working in the beauty industry again. I spent 10 years as a nail technician in Kissimmee, meeting amazing people and learning so much. During that time, my third child was born, who is now seven years old. I decided to see how far I could go with my work. I heard about an opportunity called ‘Open See’ held by the famous Henri Bendel in which designers from all over line up to pitch their designs (clothing, accessories, beauty products, etc) in hopes of being chosen to sell their work at the store. I was determined to be first in line for this so made sure I was there at 5:30am on the dot to be ready for an 8am start time and be the first in line. Low and behold I was. I was fortunate enough to be directed to the head buyer for Bendel’s and knew I only had 30 seconds to pitch my work-I pitched and was then picked to display my work and sell it at the store. I never felt so elated in my life! Read more>>

We could probably say our journey began back in 2016 when we started to become more aware that globally, coffee pickers at coffee farms do not make nearly as much as they deserve. Even though I was born in the U.S., I spent most of my childhood in Peru, living with my grandparents and my parents. She had this incredible pecan cake that, to this day, remains my favorite dessert. Wow, where do I start? To say this has been a journey is definitely an understatement. My curiosity for hair started when I was 5 years old. I would spend hours with my mom at the hair shop. My aunt would braid hair for our family. I just had to learn how to do it too. I begged my mother for a “Kenya” baby doll because she had tons of hair unlike my Barbie dolls. I would practice for hours. This birthed my talent for styling. I did my own hair for school to create my own style and identity then all the kids in the neighborhood would line up to get their hair done from me as well. Read more>>
